Doma United Clinches a 1-0 Victory Over Heartland, Regains Top Spot in The NPFL
In a thrilling encounter at the Pantami Stadium, Doma United secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Heartland of Owerri, marking a return to the top of the Nigeria Premier Football League standings. Nelson Abiam’s fourth goal of the season proved to be the decisive factor in a match that showcased Doma United’s dominance.
From the first whistle, Doma United exhibited control and authority on the pitch, with Sani Suleiman orchestrating the team’s forward movements with dazzling footwork that posed a constant challenge for Heartland’s defence. Despite the physical efforts of Clement Junior, who previously played for the Tigers, Doma United continued to press forward.
Charles Terwar had an opportunity to slot in after Hillary’s long throwing fell to him at the far post but he wasn’t in a good position, he could only manage to push the ball into a defender’s path who cleared the ball to safety.
The breakthrough came in the 42nd minute when the ever-alert Nelson Abiam, rose to meet Andrew Majalisa’s free-kick with a powerful header, sending the Pantami crowd into a frenzy of celebration.
Nelson Abiam’s goal not only secured the victory but also solidified his position as Doma United’s leading scorer this season. Andrew Majalisa’s assist added to his impressive tally, with two assists in the last two home games and three overall, along with two goals to his name.
The second half saw Doma United maintain their dominance, with Sani Suleiman and Hillary Ekawu putting immense pressure on Heartland’s midfield. A beautiful interplay between the two nearly resulted in another goal, but Sani’s volley narrowly missed the target.
As the final whistle blew, Doma United reclaimed the top spot in the league with 28 points from 15 games. Goalkeeper Kingdom Osayi continued his stellar form, boasting the most clean sheets in the league (13) and maintaining an impeccable record at home without conceding.
The absence of captain Haruna Aliyu, suspended due to accumulated yellow cards, did not deter Doma United, as Adamu Umar Adah stepped in admirably. Isaac Nassy made a noteworthy season debut, coming on for Sani Suleiman, and Usman Musa returned from injury, adding depth to the squad.
Doma United’s next challenge will be an away fixture against Sunshine Stars of Akure at the Akure Township Stadium on Wednesday, December 27, 2023.
