Federation Cup: Enugu Rangers Ends Doma United’s Unbeaten Run

Doma United’s journey in this year’s Federation Cup has come to an end after falling to a 1-0 defeat against Enugu Rangers.

United came into the game at the back of an impressive 2-1 win over Edel FC in the round of 16 but were overpowered by Rangers.

In a game that both sides started slowly, the first half ended with Ekpenyong’s early strike the only attempt on target from both sides. The winger who was lively all through, continued his adventure immediately after the break. Charles Chibuike snatched the ball from the defender and released Ekpenyong who picks the ball from the right side and fired a shot but the goalkeeper was alert to make a brilliant save.

The Enugu side were not without their own chances but United’s defense was resolute to keep them at bay. Charles Chibuike tracked back to make an important block when Rangers were on attack but the striker who played from the wings today was right on time to make a block that denied Rangers a scoring opportunity.

United created two quick chances but were not able to convert any. Zaidu Moh’d sent in an inviting cross from the left which was too much for Barnabas but fell to an onrushing Ekpenyong but his header fell to a defender whose clearance could only return to Hillary. Hillary laid it to Jumbo whose cross was well headed by Barnabas but his effort was saved by the keeper.

Ranger’s only attempt on goal drew the first blood in the 80th minutes after a clearance fell back to their winger who volleyed in pass Kingdom and eventually became the winner.

Doma United threw everything at Rangers late on but saw all their efforts been cleared by Rangers.

United played 5 games in the Federation Cup this year and suffered only one defeat in the quarterfinal.

A penalty shootout win against Gombe United was followed by a 2-0 win over Ozalla FC in the round of 64. United matched into the round of 16 after beating FR Ebunuajia 4-0 in the round of 32 and a 2-1 win over Edel FC in the round of 16 propelled the Tigers into the quarterfinal.

Charles Chibuike is the club’s top scorer in the competition this season with four goals, 1 against Gombe United in the State Final, 3 against FR Ebunuajia while Barnabas scored 3. His brace against Ozalla FA and his winner against Edel put him second on the scorer’s chat.
